MLA and Member, National Disaster Management Authority

Coming from a very illustrious political family, 57 year old Shashidhar Reddy is a third time MLA from Sanathnagar Assembly Constituency. He is the younger son of late Dr Channa Reddy garu – who was twice Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh besides being governor of five states.

In October 2005, Shashidhar Reddy was appointed a Member of the National Disaster Management Authority, with the Prime Minister as Chairman, on the lines of the Planning Commission. This position has the rank of the Minister of State at the Centre. It is for the first time that an MLA from any state has been appointed as a member of a national body with the rank of a Minister at the centre

Mr.Ravindra Reddy ’s exposure to Government working commenced in 1962 while he was assisting his father Late Dr M Channa Reddy, who was the then a Cabinet Minister in Andhra Pradesh and later as central Minister, as Governor of several States and continued until his father’s demise in 1996 while he was serving as Governor of Tamil Nadu..


1. An ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) ‘Merit Scholar’, he graduated from the AP Agricultural University, Hyderabad, in 1971 with a B.Sc.(Ag) degree.
2. Passed out with distinction with a Master’s degree in Agronomy from the Kansas State University, USA, in 1973.
3. Earlier, he was also a student of BA (English Honours) at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, in 1967, when his father Dr. Channa Reddy was a Cabinet Minister in Smt. Indira Gandhi’s cabinet.


As a Student

1. Keenly participated in student activities both at the school and the university level.
2. Took active part in the Telangana agitation in 1969 – 71 and was imprisoned in 1970.
3. Was President of Indian Association when he was a student at Kansas State University, in USA in 1972.

In the Congress Party

He actively participated in all the election campaigns since 1978 and held different positions in the Congress party. He held different positions in the party. Was Joint Secretary of the AP Congress Committee (1989 – 1992), General Secretary of APCC (1995 – 1997), Member, Pradesh Election Committee (2000 – 2003) and a Member of the All India Congress Committee from 1997 onwards. Besides these positions he has been singled out for very distinguished responsibilities at the national level.

1. He was one of the 250 party leaders from all over the country invited to participate in the Shimla Chintan Shivir – brainstorming at the highest level in the party, in July 2003. His presentation during the deliberations was hailed by many.

2. He was Convenor of the national level Task Force on Naxalite Violence constituted Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi in October 2004, to make an in-depth study of the Naxalite problem in the country. His effort has been hailed by the top Congress party leadership.

As MLA and Minister

1. 1992 Elected for the first time as MLA from Sanatnagar, in Hyderabad city. He was the only successful Congress candidate from the three bye-elections held at that time.

2. 1993 Appointed Minister for Environment, Pollution Control and Science & Technology in the Vijayabhaskar Reddy cabinet. He left a mark with his handling of the ministry and became very popular.

1. Re-elected as MLA for the second time from Sanatnagar, Hyderabad. He was one of the 26 Congress MLAs to get elected to the 294-seat assembly.
2. Participated in an International Training Seminar on “Political Strategies” at Sintra, Portugal, at the invitation of the Ferdrich Nauman Foundation of Germany, whose target group was “newly elected parliamentarians and future leaders”. It included a dozen participants – members of parliament from different parts of the world. His performance was highly appreciated at the end of the weeklong programme.
3. Was a member of the official Indian delegation to the Second UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) at New York.
4. Visited South Africa to observe the first post apartheid elections.

Espousing Issues of Public Importance

1. Utilisation of Godavari Waters and Development of Telangana Shashidhar Reddy was mainly responsible to get Godavari into the agenda of all political parties and the state government

He launched a massive awareness campaign, which included district wise conventions and direct communication by reaching out to 30,000 people covering every village by mail.

As a part of his continuous efforts, he attended the 2nd World Water Forum at The Hague in March 2000 and visited Turkey to study their regional development projects to gain first hand knowledge that could be incorporated in planning a new approach to sustainable regional development planning

He is hailed as the ‘water’ man. Even when President Kalaam referred to Godavari water utilisation, during his address to AP Assembly in July 2004, TV cameras focused on Shashidhar Reddy, in some kind of an acknowledgment for his unstinted efforts.

2. Hyderabad Drinking Water Issue

He organised Round Table meetings, involving leaders of all political parties. Intellectuals, NGOs etc., and public awareness campaign to expose the TDP government’s failure in tackling this issue, while Chandra Babu Naidu was showcasing Hyderabad to the whole world. This contributed to the rout of TDP in the 2004 elections in Hyderabad city.

3. Disaster Management Issues

He has been successfully touring several states and interacting with people at all levels. Right from Uttaranchal in north to Tamil Nadu in south, several programs and events have been organized related to disaster management issues such as mitigation, earthquakes, floods, etc.

General Comments

• The computer savvy Shashidhar Reddy is nicknamed ‘Laptop Boy’. He is credited with bringing the laptop culture to Andhra Pradesh, much before Chandra Babu Naidu, as is the popular belief.
• He is intelligent, highly articulate, very disciplined and a soft-spoken politician.
• Very keen to set new standards in public life, he shuns extravagance in public life and abhors mindless slogan shouting.
• He is a clever strategist with a very analytical mind.
• He is a very good speaker in Telugu, English, Hindi and Urdu. His speeches always stood out – both in content and in delivery, either in the assembly or outside.
• He has a great liking to student community and as he himself was an active student leader both in India and the United States. He understands the mind of the youth and has vision for them to excel in all walks of life.
• He has maintained a very clean record in public life. He believes that credibility is the greatest virtue for a public worker. He has earned this in plenty by his conduct for which he is highly respected by all sections including intellectuals and bureaucrats besides party cadres and people in general.
